Þvílíkar ófreskjur! (What monsters!), the title of this book by Auður Aðalsteinsdóttir, professor at the humanities department of the University of Iceland, refers to one of the first literary criticisms to appear in Icelandic newspapers. Written by romantic poet Jónas Hallgrímsson it was his description of the Icelandic rhyme tradition that he felt had truly seen better days, it might just have set the tone for literary critics that followed.
