Scientists made various groundbreaking discoveries in the sixteenth and nineteenth century. Very few however know that an Icelandic crystal played a key role in that development. That is the Iceland spar, also known as Iceland crystal. What is more is that for two hundred and fifty years there was largely only one place in Iceland where you could mine it; Helgustaðir, Reyðarfjörður in the east of Iceland. Truly an interesting bit of history.
