King Ólafur Haraldsson, ruled Norway for a decade when he was forced into exile and eventually died in the battle of Stiklastaðir. After he fell, miracles are said to have happened close to his body. Before meeting his fate however there at Stiklastaðir, Ólafur traveled  over Kjöl in Sweden to Stiklastaðir and the route became one of more popular pilgrim routes in the Nordic countries. Icelandic author Jón Benedikt Björnsson, traveled this route on his bike nearly a thousand years later.
