A man starts visiting a friend hospitalized in a psychiatric ward. The visits causes friction with a nurse in charge of the friend, who bans any further visits. Consequently, they decide the friend must flee the hospital. The nurse pursues and what follows is a fantastic road trip through the maze of Icelandic society as the friends head straight for Kolbeinsey, a small barren rock of an island, some 200 nautical miles north of Iceland.
