Hjartastaður was first published in 1995 and for it, it´s author Steinunn Sigurðardóttir, received the Icelandic Literary Prize. In it Steinunn tells the story of Harpa Eir, fleeing Reykjavík to save her daughter, traveling with her in the car driven by her daughter´s friend. They travel to Harpa Eir´s place of birth in the east of Iceland and as they travel so unravels a many layered story of the three women´s past and present. 
With an epilogue by Guðni Elísson, literature professor at the University of Iceland.
