An old blue handbag was stored at the Icelandic president's residence in Bessastaðir, for many years. It contained letters written by former president Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson's mother to her family in the Westfjords of Iceland. It was written while she lay like so many young people, particularly women, lay sick with tuberculosis in the Icelandic hospital Landakot. Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson writes an introduction to the book and explanatory texts where needed. Very interesting book with a personal perspective to these difficult times in Iceland's history.
