In the background of this novel, the first by lawyer Skúli Thoroddsen, there are events that took place around Askja in the Icelandic highlands in the year 1907. Two Germans, a geologist and an artist, disappeared without a trace. The girlfriend of one of them, the Prussian artistic Ína, travels to Iceland a year later to try and track down the last days of her loved one.
