The year is 1927 and chairman and chief ideologist of the Icelandic political party called The Progressive Party, Jónas frá Hriflu is probably the most powerful man in the country. Then sheriff Einar M. Jónasson is found guilty of incompetence in his work and subsequently looses it. That does not somehow seem enough for Jónas frá Hriflu who sets out to make a lasting example of the unfortunate sheriff.
